Why do puppies like to lick people's feet?

Puppies liking to lick people's feet usually expresses their love for their owners, indicating that the puppies have a high level of trust in them. Secondly, it may be because the puppies are hungry or bored and want to attract their owners' attention in this way, reminding them that it's time for food. Additionally, some studies have shown that dogs can indeed taste a salty flavor from human skin. Therefore, puppies' preference for licking human feet might be due to the salt on their skin, which stimulates the dog's nerves and makes them think it tastes delicious.

  1. Expressing love for the owner

In dogs' cognition, licking is a very affectionate behavior. Since dog mothers frequently lick their puppies, when dogs frequently lick human feet, it means they are very dependent on and love their owners. If a dog finds its owner in a bad mood, it will also use licking to comfort them.

  1. Hunger

If a dog starts licking your feet at mealtime, it could be expressing hunger and wanting to remind you to prepare food. Some puppies will even sit next to their food bowl and bark at their owners, indicating that it's time for dinner. In this case, all the owner needs to do is timely feed their dog.

  1. Wanting to attract the owner's attention

When dogs are bored, they will use licking as a way to attract their owners' attention and ask for playtime.

At this point, the owner can spend some time playing with the dog or prepare more toys for it, so the dog won't be so bored.

  1. The feet have a scent the dog likes

Dogs have a highly developed sense of smell. Especially after sweating, the owner's feet will have their unique smell and salt. This saltiness stimulates the dog's nerves, making them think it tastes delicious, hence the constant licking. However, excessive salt intake is not good for the dog's health, and the feet have many bacteria, so it's best not to let the dog form the habit of licking human feet.
