Can a cat recover from eating rat poison?
Rat poison is essentially a highly toxic substance. Under normal circumstances, if a cat accidentally ingests rat poison, the chance of self-recovery is almost zero. Rat poison mainly includes neurotoxic and warfarin-like compounds, with the former causing death within a short period. If a cat accidentally eats rat poison, it is recommended to take it to a pet hospital for further examination and treatment.
Rat poison includes anticoagulants such as warfarin, phosphorated zinc, rodenticides, and敌鼠钠盐. Symptoms caused by different components of rat poison vary, and the lethal time also differs. Basically, a cat cannot recover on its own after eating rat poison and needs immediate medical attention.
Warfarin-like rodenticides can cause severe respiratory disorders and reduce blood coagulation, leading to bleeding tendencies in poisoned cats. Clinical manifestations include rapid breathing, low body temperature, sometimes accompanied by vomiting. Soon after, complications such as pulmonary edema lead to difficulty breathing, bloody foamy nasal discharge, and coughing.
Symptoms of phosphorated zinc poisoning first appear as a significant decrease in appetite, followed by vomiting and abdominal pain. Vomit has a garlic smell, emits phosphorescence in dark areas, and stool mixed with blood.
Acute and subacute poisoning can occur after ingesting rodenticides. In the former, cats often have no previous symptoms and die suddenly. In the latter, cats show clinical manifestations such as mucous membrane pallor, difficulty breathing, frequent nosebleeds, and rectal bleeding. The prominent feature of poisoning is extensive bleeding, with common sites including the chest and subcutaneous tissue.
The mechanism of action of敌鼠钠盐 poisoning is similar to that of warfarin, belonging to the anticoagulant rodenticide class. Symptoms usually appear three days after accidental ingestion. Affected cats show decreased appetite, depression, rapid breathing, and later持续出现feces with blood, skin purpurae等hemorrhagic symptoms. In the later stage, the cat's breathing becomes extremely difficult and dies of asphyxiation.
