Can dogs eat grapes?
Dogs should not eat grapes under any circumstances. This is because grapes contain a toxic substance that, when accumulated to a certain level in a dog's body, can cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and drooling. Long-term feeding can also increase the dog's renal burden, leading to acute renal failure. In severe cases, it can even cause death. If a dog accidentally eats grapes, immediate vomiting induction is necessary, and the dog should be taken to the nearest pet hospital for emergency treatment.
Why can't dogs eat grapes?
Dogs cannot eat grapes because they contain a toxic substance that, when accumulated to a certain level, can cause renal failure and even death. In addition, grapes have a high sugar content, which can easily lead to obesity and diabetes. Therefore, it is recommended that owners do not feed their dogs grapes. If a dog shows symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and drooling after eating grapes, it is advisable to take the dog to the hospital for vomiting or gastric washing induction, and administer corresponding medications.
Symptoms of grape poisoning in dogs
The early symptoms of grape poisoning in dogs include depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. If not treated in time, later symptoms may include dehydration, seizures, renal failure, and even acute death. Therefore, once a dog eats grapes and shows signs of poisoning, immediate vomiting or gastric washing treatment is necessary, using activated carbon for absorption. Meanwhile, fluid therapy should be administered to accelerate the metabolism of toxic substances.
What to do if a dog eats grapes
After a dog eats grapes, observe its mental state, appetite, and bowel movements for any abnormalities. If found, take the dog to the hospital immediately. Generally, a dog eating a small amount of grapes will not cause serious harm, but the toxic substance in grapes can accumulate in the body. If a dog eats too many grapes or eats them for a long time, it can lead to poisoning and renal failure, even death.
How long before a dog is safe after eating grapes
If a dog does not show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or shortness of breath within 1-3 hours after eating grapes, it has passed the safe period. However, for small dogs such as Toy Poodles and Pugs, it is recommended that owners take their dogs to the pet hospital for inspection. Small dogs' organ metabolic capabilities are not as strong as those of large dogs, and they may suffer internal organ damage after eating grapes, even if no immediate symptoms are apparent.
