Can dogs take cold medicine the day before getting a vaccine?
Dogs should not take cold medicine the day before getting a vaccine. However, if a dog is sick with a cold and cannot be vaccinated, it is because the cold weakens the body's immune system, leading to infection of the vaccine strain. If a dog gets a cold after being vaccinated, antibiotics and antiviral cold medicines cannot be used, as they will kill the bacteria and viruses in the vaccine and prevent the vaccine from stimulating the body to produce protective antibodies, thus failing to achieve the preventive effect.
Appropriate cold medicine for dogs
When a dog has a cold, early on, you can give it some banlangen powder. Do not give the dog adult cold medicine. Dogs with cough symptoms can take additional oral compound licorice tablets, 3-4 tablets at a time, twice a day. In conjunction with oral aspirin, 1-2 tablets at a time. When the temperature exceeds 40°C and shivering occurs, fever-reducing and pain-relieving drugs can be used, such as Antongning, which is commonly used. Inject 0.5-2 ml subcutaneously or intramuscularly according to the dog's size. You can also feed Chaohu Chongji.
Food to avoid during vaccination
Do not eat antibacterial, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc. Most vaccines today are weakened vaccines, and eating antibacterial and antiviral drugs can easily make the vaccine ineffective, leading to failure of antibody production. Do not feed the dog food it has never eaten before or rarely eats. Do not give deworming medicine on the day of vaccination but can use drop-type deworming medicine, and add vitamin medicine to the food to enhance the dog's immunity.
Precautions after vaccination
After the dog is vaccinated, observe it for about 20 minutes to ensure that there are no allergic reactions. To maintain the dog's health, it is best not to bathe it, nor should you randomly change its food or environment. If you want to take it outside to play, wait until a week later. Within three days after vaccination, do not give the dog deworming or antibiotics, as taking these drugs may prevent the vaccine from working effectively and ultimately fail.
