Canine Cold Causing Middle Ear Infection
Canine cold can lead to middle ear infection, which initially presents with symptoms such as redness, swelling, and itching of the external ear canal, a watery to yellowish serous discharge, and stained fur under the ear. The dog may appear uneasy, often shaking its head or scratching its ears. As the condition progresses, local swelling exacerbates or abscesses appear, secreting a dark brown, malodorous pus. Oral or injectable antibiotics are needed to control the infection, along with daily ear cleaning twice a day and use of the medication prescribed by the doctor.
Middle Ear Infection Symptoms
Increased ear canal discharge, possibly containing pus. The ear canal presents with itching, resulting in frequent scratching by the dog, causing redness and swelling of the external ear. Due to neural damage caused by middle ear infection, the dog may lean its head towards the affected side and exhibit circular movements. Recurrent middle ear infections can cause tissue thickening in the ear canal, even tumors, leading to thickening of the ear flap, deformation of the ear, and hearing impairment.
Treatment for Middle Ear Infection
First, clean the dog's ear canal with physiological saline, then with a saltwater solution containing antibiotics until clean. Use a cotton swab to apply the medication around the ear canal. Administer antibiotics according to the dog's weight and the doctor's instructions. Wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent the dog from scratching its ear and causing bleeding.
Harms of Middle Ear Infection
Middle ear infection complications can lead to deafness and balance disorders. The dog may lean towards the affected side, unable to stand or eat and drink properly. In severe cases, inflammation invades the facial nerve and parasympathetic nerve, causing facial paralysis, dry keratitis, and nasal mucosa dryness. Inflammation invading the meninges can cause meningitis, leading to death. It is recommended to treat the dog promptly to avoid inflammation spreading.
