What happens when a cat drinks yogurt?

Cats can drink yogurt, but it is generally not recommended for them to drink milk directly because they may experience lactose intolerance. However, yogurt is an exception. Since milk undergoes fermentation, the proteins and lactose that are difficult to digest and absorb have been broken down. Drinking yogurt can even promote digestion in cats. However, feeding too much yogurt can cause diarrhea, so the amount of yogurt fed to cats should be controlled.

Yogurt contains live probiotic components such as Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, which are easier to digest and absorb compared to milk. This makes the nutrients in yogurt more bioavailable. Therefore, it is recommended to feed cats yogurt in moderation.

When it comes to regulating the intestinal tract, there is a big difference between yogurt and pet-specific probiotics. The bacteria in yogurt are different from those in probiotics, and they are quite weak. These bacteria cannot survive in the intestine for a long time and lose their effectiveness after digestion. The number of probiotics that can survive is too small to protect the intestinal tract. However, the health benefits of bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, and Bifidobacterium in pet-specific probiotics are stronger than those in yogurt.

It should be noted that there are differences in physical fitness among individual cats. And scientifically speaking, it is not advisable to feed cats yogurt randomly. However, if your cat has constipation, trying a small amount of yogurt won't cause any problems.
