Teary and secreting eyes in cats

When a cat's eyes tear and produce secretions, the first thing to consider is whether external environmental factors are stimulating the cat. Generally, by removing the cause and using pet anti-inflammatory eye drops, the cat can gradually recover. Secondly, consider infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites. In this case, in addition to eye drops, antibiotics and drugs targeting the cause of the disease are necessary.

  1. External environmental stimuli

There are many factors in the environment that may act as allergens to cats, such as pollen, insect bites, dust mites, air fresheners, cosmetics, and perfumes. These can stimulate the cat's eyes and cause tearing and secretions. In this situation, the owner should first remove the harmful factors in the cat's environment and then deal with the cat's eyes. If there are foreign objects trapped, they should be rinsed out with saline solution and the cat should receive daily drops of pet-specific anti-inflammatory eye drops.

  1. Infectious factors

Viruses, bacteria, and parasites can all cause eye infections when they come into contact with the eyes, leading to conjunctivitis. Early symptoms include increased tearing and secretions. Eye abnormalities caused by infection can lead to severe consequences, such as corneal ulcers and even blindness. It is recommended that owners take their cats to the hospital for PCR testing of related viruses and bacteria after discovering eye abnormalities. Currently, pet hospitals offer "respiratory syndromes联合检测", which can detect multiple virus infections simultaneously and identify whether the cat is infected with viruses or bacteria. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, appropriate antibiotic treatment and eye drops can be used.

Additionally, some cats do not have regular deworming procedures, and after coming into contact with the outside world, they may become infected with ocular nematodes, stimulating inflammation of the conjunctiva and causing increased tearing and secretions. In the later stages, owners may even be able to see the nematodes "swimming" in the conjunctival sac with the naked eye. In this case, it is necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital for surgical treatment.
