Cat Urethral Cystostomy Complications

Complications of cat urethral cystostomy mainly include retrograde infections caused by shortening and thickening of the urethra. Regardless of the surgical procedure, there is a possibility of infection, which can lead to bacterial cystitis, nephritis, and other complications. In addition to the common complications, the complications of different urethral cystostomies also differ. The wound of the traditional urethral cystostomy is prone to infection due to long-term urine contamination, easily causing urinary system infections. If there are improper sutures after the Yap Urethral Cystostomy, bleeding, urine leakage, and incontinence may occur. Moreover, the process of placing a urinary catheter also increases the risk of wound infection or tearing.

  1. Firstly, there are two ways of cat urethral cystostomy: perineal cystostomy, also known as traditional urethral cystostomy, which can solve the problem of recurrent urethral obstruction in cats; and Yap Urethral Cystostomy, which is more aesthetically pleasing than the traditional procedure.

  2. The main complications of traditional urethral cystostomy are urethral infections, bladder infections, and even retrograde nephritis. This is usually due to the overall length of the cat's urethra becoming shorter after surgery, increasing the probability of bacterial retrograde infections. When the cat's urinary system becomes infected, symptoms such as increased frequency of urination and blood in the urine may occur. If there is also a retrograde infection, the cat may develop pyelonephritis.

  3. Complications of Yap Urethral Cystostomy are generally due to improper suturing, rupture at the site of urethral and foreskin fusion, causing bleeding, urine leakage, and incontinence. Secondly, due to the need for a urinary catheter after surgery, there is a certain chance of infection occurring. Additionally, bacterial cystitis is also a common complication of Yap Urethral Cystostomy. This is because the cat's physiological structure changes, the urethra becomes thicker and shorter, increasing the possibility of ascending urethritis.

  4. To avoid complications to the maximum extent, owners need to carefully care for cats after surgery. If it is a traditional urethral cystostomy procedure, the wound is prone to infection before healing, so it is necessary to disinfect the wound on time and keep it clean and dry. For Yap Urethral Cystostomy, the urinary catheter is usually removed about 3 days after surgery. Special attention should be paid to maintaining the integrity of the urethral and foreskin fusion site to avoid wound撕裂,否则容易导致漏尿或感染。
