What to do if your cat vomits hairballs

It's shedding season again, and your cat might be vomiting hairballs. Although they are called hairballs, they are actually long and shaped like tubes. It's more like coughing, because it's a dry cough. If it happens once or twice a week, it's fine. But if it's too frequent, we need to intervene manually.

Symptoms of cat vomiting hairballs:

  1. If it sounds like coughing but nothing comes out and it's very frequent, we need to consider whether there is a respiratory infection or asthma, and see a doctor.

  2. Frequent dry coughs with objects vomited, which are hairballs.

What to do about cat hairballs:

  1. Hairball gel: If you can't feed it to your cat's mouth, apply it to their elbow. Cats are clean freaks, and they will lick the gel off while cleaning themselves.

  2. Brushing: Use a fine-tooth brush for short-haired cats and a wide-tooth brush for long-haired cats.

  3. Vaseline: A foreign veterinarian has been feeding his cat Vaseline to dissolve hairballs for 20 years.

  4. Diet: Recommend feeding grain-based canned food. This depends on the owner's economic status and the cat's individual preferences.

  5. Catnip: If the pet owner is active, they can grow catnip themselves to feed their cat.
