Causes of Exposure of the Third Eyelid in Cats

The exposure of the third eyelid in cats does not have a specific cause, but it may be caused by external stimulation or improper daily diet. It is recommended for owners to pay more attention to their cat's eye conditions and try to avoid generating stimuli. If you notice that your cat has exposure of the third eyelid, the best solution is to take it to a pet hospital for a third eyelid removal surgery. This is a long-term solution that can permanently solve the problem and is less likely to recur. Conservative treatment can also solve the problem, but it may recur.

There are many factors that can cause the third eyelid to be exposed in cats, including the following:

  1. External stimulation to the cat's eyes can cause the third eyelid to appear. However, it may also be caused by a viral infection that causes the eye muscles to contract and move into the eye socket, or by a decrease in the fatty tissue in the cat's retina, which causes the eyeball to move backwards and presses the third eyelid forward, resulting in exposure.

  2. If a cat has stomach discomfort, chronic parasite infections, loss of appetite, fever, or progressive bulbar palsy, it may also lead to the appearance of the third eyelid.

  3. Neck injury or excessive pressure can cause nerve paralysis of the third eyelid movement, leading to symptoms of exposure of the third eyelid.

  4. Improper daily diet can also cause the third eyelid to be exposed in cats. For example, constantly feeding the cat high-salt, high-fat, or high-protein foods can easily lead to the disease.
