Common Skin Diseases in Border Collies

Common skin diseases in Border Collies include bacterial skin diseases, fungal skin diseases, mites, and mixed infections of the above. Bacterial skin diseases are generally caused by bacterial infections following wounds or bites. Fungal skin diseases occur when fungi invade and multiply on the skin, and they are more stubborn and take longer to cure. Mite infections include itch mites, mange mites, and Demodex mites.

Causes of Skin Diseases

The main reasons for dogs to contract skin diseases are wounds, food, and environmental factors that reduce their skin's resistance, allowing fungi, bacteria, and parasites to multiply and infect the skin, resulting in symptoms of skin diseases in dogs. Food allergies, contact allergies, inhalant allergies, and flea allergies can also cause skin diseases in dogs.

Symptoms of Skin Diseases

Dog skin diseases mainly include fungal, bacterial, and mite infections. The common symptoms include hair loss, dandruff, crusts, red spots, papules, and others. All skin diseases cause itching in dogs, leading them to constantly scratch with their front paws. Long-term scratching can cause skin ulcers, bleeding, and abscesses.

How to Treat Skin Diseases

For pus-forming and inflamed skin diseases: Disinfect with hydrogen peroxide, apply an antibiotic ointment such as erythromycin ointment, sulfur ointment, and dermatitis paste. Note that dermatitis paste contains hormones and should be used sparingly. For fungal infections: Apply ketoconazole,癣净,and Dakinonycin ointment. For mite infections: Apply sulfur ointment. For fleas and lice: Use dichlorvos shampoo, or apply insecticidal drops to the dog's back, or use dog and cat flea collars. As soon as skin diseases are detected in dogs, immediately wash and expose daily pet supplies and bedding, clean the floor, and disinfect if necessary.
