Why does my Corgi have a lot of eye discharge?
A Corgi with a lot of eye discharge may be due to factors such as being "heaty", eye inflammation, canine distemper, or parvovirus.
- Heaty
If your Corgi has been eating dry, hard food and not drinking enough water, or eating food with high salt content for a long time, it can cause "heat" in the body, leading to an increase in eye discharge and frequent tearning. To address this, immediately adjust your dog's diet to lighter and lower-sodium options, and ensure they have enough to drink.
- Eye inflammation
If your Corgi has a lot of eye discharge accompanied by redness, swelling, and tearning, it's likely due to eye inflammation caused by foreign objects irritating the eye or ingrown eyelashes. If the discharge is caused by dust or hair entering the eye, rinse the eye with saline solution. If the eye discharge is caused by ingrown eyelashes, use tweezers to remove them or seek surgical treatment.
- Canine distemper or parvovirus
If your Corgi's eye discharge is thick and yellowish, it could be due to canine distemper, parvovirus, or other infections. This will also be accompanied by loss of appetite, diarrhea, and pus-filled nasal discharge. Immediately take your dog to the vet for testing and treatment, as canine distemper is a highly contagious and fatal disease if not treated promptly.
