What should I do if my dog's buttocks swell up and form a large bump?

A large bump on a dog's buttocks may be caused by various reasons, such as anal gland inflammation, perineal hernia, or insect bites.

  1. Anal Gland Inflammation:

It is recommended to squeeze a dog's anal glands every 15 days to a month. If the glands are not cleaned for a long time, they may become inflamed and swollen. Owners should promptly help their dogs express the accumulated anal gland fluid.

  1. Perineal Hernia:

If the dog has a large bump on its buttocks accompanied by constipation or diarrhea, it may be a perineal hernia. Owners can try touching the swollen area. If it is soft and can be pushed back in, it is likely a perineal hernia, which usually requires surgery to repair. If the hernia is not repaired in time, the bladder may fall into the hernia sac and cause urinary tract obstruction, possibly leading to kidney failure.

  1. Insect or Parasite Bites:

If a dog's buttocks are bitten by insects or parasites, they can also swell up. In this case, owners can apply antibacterial ointment to the affected area and regularly prevent parasite bites. As long as the dog shows no other abnormalities, the bump should disappear in a couple of days.

Owners should pay attention to their dog's behavior and consult a veterinarian if the symptoms persist or worsen.
