What should dogs eat to stop diarrhea?
Indigestion, parasite infection, bacterial or viral infection may all cause diarrhea in dogs. If your dog has diarrhea but is still energetic and has a good appetite, without vomiting, you can feed it some pet probiotics or use physical diarrhea remedies like white clay or basic carbonate of bismuth. If your dog has diarrhea accompanied by lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, and high fever, it's time to go to the hospital for a checkup and symptomatic treatment.
Note that it is not recommended for owners to give dogs antibiotics or other medications at home themselves, as this could cause even more severe complications.
First, the dog needs to be fasting and thirst-free for half a day. Then, feed it an appropriate amount of pet probiotics. Remember to use warm water to mix the probiotics, avoiding the death of beneficial bacteria. Then, choose the appropriate treatment based on the specific cause of the dog's diarrhea.
If the diarrhea is caused by improper food intake or other similar reasons, and the dog's mental state is good and there are no other symptoms, you can feed it physical diarrhea remedies like white clay or basic carbonate of bismuth to alleviate the symptoms and closely observe the dog's condition.
If the diarrhea is caused by a parasite infection, the owner should promptly use deworming medications containing ingredients like Albendazole, Pyrantel, or Levamisole to give the dog an emergency deworming treatment.
If the diarrhea is caused by viral or bacterial infections, such as parvovirus or distemper, the dog usually exhibits symptoms like lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, and high fever. These diseases have a high mortality rate, and it is not recommended for owners to treat them at home, especially with various antibiotics. It's better to take the dog to the hospital immediately and consult the doctor before choosing the appropriate treatment plan.
