What should I do if my dog has diarrhea in summer?

Diarrhea in dogs during summer is usually caused by cold exposure, eating too much cold food, consuming spoiled or rotten food, and parasite infection. To avoid diarrhea, owners should regularly vaccinate and test for antibodies, as well as perform routine deworming procedures. Do not feed dogs a variety of foods or cold foods, and pay attention to keeping them warm in cold weather. If you are unsure of the cause of the diarrhea, it is recommended to go to the pet hospital for inspection and treat accordingly based on the examination results.

  1. Cold exposure

In hot summer days, if the air conditioning temperature is set too low or the dog enters the cooled room immediately after exercise, it can easily lead to cold exposure and diarrhea. Therefore, when turning on the air conditioning, owners should avoid setting the temperature too low and not expose dogs to large temperature differences. Allow dogs to gradually adapt to temperature changes to prevent cold exposure.

  1. Eating too much cold food

If owners feed dogs cold foods in summer, such as watermelon and ice cream, which stimulate the stomach and cause gastrointestinal discomfort, it can lead to diarrhea. In this case, you can first feed the dog a suitable amount of probiotics to observe, and also recommend owners to feed dogs less cold food to avoid intestinal disorders and subsequent diarrhea.

  1. Eating spoiled or rotten food

Since summer temperatures are high, food is more susceptible to spoilage and bacterial contamination than other seasons. If dogs eat these foods, they are likely to cause gastrointestinal infections and lead to diarrhea. Therefore, owners should always replace dog food frequently in summer. If the dog does not finish eating, it should be discarded in time. Once discovering that the dog has eaten spoiled or rotten food, timely treatment should be sought.

  1. Parasite infection

Summer weather is humid and hot, which facilitates the breeding and transmission of mosquitoes and bacteria. Dogs are easily infected with external parasites such as lice and fleas, especially those who frequently go outside. If dogs come into contact with other sick pets or their feces, they can easily be infected. Therefore, owners should always pay attention to regularly deworming dogs both internally and externally. When taking dogs for walks, try to avoid close contact with other unfamiliar pets.
