How long after your dog gets the distemper vaccine can they take a bath?
Firstly, your dog can take a bath one week after getting the vaccine. Secondly, vaccination usually involves a combined vaccine, rarely a single vaccine. The vaccines currently used in the market are mostly inactivated vaccines. Examples of these include the Vanguard 5 and Vanguard 8 produced by Pfizer in the United States, the Merial 6-in-1 vaccine in France, and the Intervet 6-in-1 vaccine in the Netherlands. These brands of vaccines are relatively safe and reliable.
Conditions for dogs to be vaccinated
- The dog has not taken antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and glucocorticoids for a long time in the one or two weeks before the vaccination.
- The owner has kept the dog for at least seven days and has undergone deworming.
- The dog is healthy within one week before the vaccination. There should be no unhealthy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Immunization precautions
- Choose a reliable brand of vaccine and be aware of the expiration date. The use of expired vaccines is strictly prohibited.
- Stay at the pet hospital for 15 to 30 minutes after the vaccination to monitor for allergic reactions.
- Do not take the dog outdoors until two to three weeks after the vaccination, as it takes this long for the dog to develop new resistance.
- Do not bathe the dog or overfeed it for one week after the injection. You can bathe the dog seven days after the vaccination to prevent colds and diarrhea.
Common reasons for vaccination failure
- Interference from maternal antibodies. Antibody level testing can be done before vaccination. If the antibody level is too high, it is not suitable to vaccinate.
- Interference from biological preparations. If antibody or serum products have been used, vaccination should be restarted at least one week later.
- Vaccination under unhealthy conditions.
- Immunity defects caused by the pet's own immune system.
