Dog dry heaving with clicking sound

Dog dry heaving with a clicking sound may be caused by rapid eating, foreign body in the throat, gastritis, tracheitis, pneumonia, asthma, and other reasons. If it is caused by rapid eating, it is a normal physiological phenomenon and generally does not require medication treatment. If it is accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms, such as throat pain, abdominal pain, coughing, shortness of breath, etc., it is recommended that the owner take the dog to a regular hospital in a timely manner. Otherwise, it is easy to delay the treatment time and lead to worsening of the condition.

  1. Rapid eating

If a dog eats too fast, it may stimulate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing dry heaving and abnormal sounds. It is necessary to slow down the eating speed. No binge eating or eating too fast, and generally does not require medication treatment.

  1. Foreign body in the throat

If a foreign body occurs in the throat, it may cause discomfort and lead to choking. It is accompanied by dry heaving and requires a professional doctor to use tools to remove the foreign body.

  1. Gastritis

Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa, usually manifested as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Without treatment, the vomiting may become worse, accompanied by a clicking sound. It is necessary to follow the doctor's advice to take antibiotics, protect the gastric mucosa, and promote digestion.

  1. Tracheitis

Usually caused by multiple virus infections, such as influenza virus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, etc. Typical symptoms include wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, anorexia, and bloody sputum. Severe coughing may also occur, causing dry heaving and requiring medical consultation for fever-reducing, pain-relieving drugs, bronchodilators, and cough medications.

  1. Pneumonia

Usually caused by bacterial and viral infections, it can lead to damage to the pulmonary tissue and cause coughing, expectoration, and shortness of breath. When the cough is severe, it may stimulate the throat mucosa, causing dry heaving and abnormal sounds. Antiviral and antibiotic medications can be taken under a doctor's guidance.

  1. Asthma

If a dog already has asthma, it will exhibit symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. Without timely improvement, it may cause dry heaving and clicking sounds, causing damage to the throat mucosa. Treatment usually involves inhaling corticosteroids as per the doctor's advice.
