What happens when a dog eats too much meat?
A dog that eats too much meat may experience indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Secondly, if a dog frequently eats a lot of meat, it can easily become overweight, leading to severe tear stains, excessive eye discharge, and yellowish urine. Furthermore, long-term meat consumption can also cause picky eating, bad breath, obesity, and calcium deficiency. Therefore, it is recommended that dog owners feed their pets dog food as the main diet and occasionally give them a small amount of meat.
- Indigestion
Dogs have limited digestive capabilities for meat, and meat contains a large amount of protein and fat. If a dog eats too much meat, it may lead to indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
- Heatstroke
Eating too much meat can cause dogs to become overheated, leading to symptoms such as severe tear stains, excessive eye discharge, and yellowish urine. Particularly, food intended for humans contains a lot of salt, which can cause dogs to become overheated, so owners should be cautious.
- Picky Eating
Long-term consumption of meat can lead dogs to develop picky eating habits, causing them to dislike dog food and only want to eat meat. This can lead to malnutrition and affect their physical development and overall immunity.
- Bad Breath
Meat foods are easy to get caught between teeth. If these remaining pieces of meat are not cleaned up in time, they can breed bacteria and cause bad breath over time. Owners should feed their dogs light meals, regularly brush their teeth, and provide chewing bones or toys to help clean their mouths.
- Obesity
Eating too much meat in a normal diet can easily lead to overweightness, especially in middle-aged and elderly dogs. Overweightness can cause a series of diseases, such as diabetes, fatty liver, heart disease, pancreatitis, etc.
- Calcium Deficiency
Meat does not contain vitamins A, D, and calcium. If dogs are fed a single type of meat for a long time, the meat's calcium-to-phosphorus ratio may be uneven, leading to poor bone and joint development.
