What to do if your dog refuses to eat new dog food
1. Feed a combination of new and old dog food
If your dog refuses to eat new dog food, it might be because they aren't used to the new formula. To transition your dog to the new food, you can mix both the new and old dog foods together and use the 7-day transition method. On the first day, you can feed 80% old food and 20% new food. On days two and three, feed 50% old food and 50% new food. On days four, five, and six, feed 20% old food and 80% new food. By day seven, you can switch to feeding only the new food.
2. Add foods your dog likes to the new dog food
Canned food and sheep milk are some of the favorite foods for dogs. You can add some of these to the new dog food to increase your dog's appetite and then gradually increase the amount of dog food you feed.
3. Temporarily skip a couple of meals
If your dog stubbornly refuses to eat the new dog food, you can try skipping a couple of meals. When your dog gets really hungry, they will eventually eat the dog food. Generally, it's okay for a dog to skip a few meals, as long as they have access to plenty of clean drinking water.
Note: If your dog still refuses to eat the dog food even after trying these methods, check if the dog food has expired or if there is a quality issue. You should also consider taking your dog to the vet to check if there is an underlying health condition causing the refusal to eat. If it's due to a disease, timely treatment is necessary.
