Dog's mouth has a foul smell

A foul smell in a dog's mouth may be caused by excessive tartar, oral diseases, food residues, and other reasons.

  1. Excessive tartar: If a dog is fed a liquid diet for a long time without proper teeth cleaning or brushing, food residues will get stuck in the teeth gaps. As time goes by, tartar will form on the teeth, causing bad breath in the dog's mouth. If not dealt with promptly, the tartar will become more severe. Therefore, it is recommended to feed dogs with fewer soft foods and focus on dog food as the main diet. You can also give your dog chew toys or dental sticks to help clean the mouth and brush the dog's teeth to prevent tartar formation.

  2. Oral diseases: Dogs with oral diseases such as stomatitis, ulcers, and gingivitis may also have a foul smell in their mouths. These diseases are accompanied by poor appetite, drooling, swollen and bleeding gums, and other symptoms. In this case, it is necessary to take the dog to a pet hospital for inspection and treatment promptly to avoid worsening the condition.

  3. Food residues: If a dog has a long-term liquid diet, the residues will breed a large number of bacteria in the mouth. After the bacteria decay, a foul smell will be produced. Therefore, dog owners must regularly clean their dog's mouths, and it is generally recommended to brush the dog's teeth once a week.
