How long do dogs bleed during ovulation?

Usually, when a female dog is in heat, she will show symptoms such as irritability, swollen vulva, and red discharge. Ovulation usually begins on the 3rd to 5th day of the dog's heat cycle. The vulva will continue to bleed for 2 to 3 weeks during the heat cycle, with the initial color being relatively dark and the bleeding volume increasing over time. The dog is most susceptible to pregnancy about 10 days after the heat cycle starts. It is best to have your dog wear safety pants during this time to avoid the discharge from dripping onto the floor.

Dogs usually begin to go into heat around 8 months old, with two heat cycles per year, usually in spring and autumn. Each heat cycle lasts about 20 days. When a female dog's vulva bleeds, it indicates the pre-heat stage, which usually lasts for 13 to 15 days. After that, the dog enters the heat cycle, and the ovulation period occurs on the 3rd to 5th day. If this is the dog's first heat, it is not recommended to mate the dog because she has only reached sexual maturity. If there is a breeding requirement, wait until the dog is 1.5 years old and physically mature before breeding.

During the heat cycle, the female dog's vulva will bleed, and ovulation occurs 3 to 5 days after the bleeding stops. To confirm if the dog has ovulated, a progesterone test and ultrasound examination can be performed. During the heat cycle, the dog may show signs of approaching male dogs actively and accepting mounting, etc. If an adult dog with a breeding requirement is in heat, mating can be done during this period. If there is no breeding requirement, restrict the dog's outdoor activities, ensure all doors are closed to prevent the dog from running out, and always hold the dog's leash when taking it outside.

During the heat cycle, the female dog's vagina is in a relaxed state, so it is best to avoid giving the dog a bath to prevent bacteria from entering the vagina. Additionally, dogs are more susceptible to illness during this time, so it is essential to keep the dog warm by providing a blanket or dressing the dog. The dog may become irritable and restless due to physiological needs during the heat cycle, so extra attention and comforting are necessary. Engage the dog in play with toys to distract them.
