What's the matter with the red and swollen area near the dog's urethra?

The red and swollen area near the dog's urethra may be due to a urinary tract infection, which may be caused by injured urethral mucosa leading to secondary infection. It could also be caused by the spread of inflammation to nearby organs, such as testicular inflammation, cystitis, or endometritis. When a dog is suspected or found to have a urinary tract infection, it is necessary to take the dog to a pet hospital for diagnosis and treatment, including inflammation suppression, bacteria killing, and anti-infection measures.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

Urethritis generally presents with difficulties in urination, pain during urination, cloudy urine (mixed with pus and blood), linear urine, dog's suffering and restlessness, painful urinary dribbling, intermittent urine discharge due to inflammatory pain, frequent flicking of the male dog's penis during urination, and continuous opening and closing of the female dog's vulva. Sometimes, necrotic and detached urethral mucosa is discharged. On palpation, the dog's penis is swollen and sensitive, and the urethral opening is red and swollen. During urethral exploration, the dog shows pain and restlessness, and it is difficult to insert a urinary catheter.

Treatment for Urethral Redness and Swelling

Owners can purchase antibiotics from an animal hospital under the doctor's advice and use them along with urinary tract inflammation drops. If the dog's urethral redness and swelling are severe, such as difficulty in urination, the dog should be taken to an animal hospital for a specific examination because it may be caused by urinary calculi.

Precautions for Urethral Redness and Swelling

It is not recommended for owners to feed their dogs human antibiotics. Owners may not accurately control the dosage of medication. The metabolism mechanism of humans and dogs is different, so it is best not to feed human drugs to dogs. Owners are advised to take their dogs to the hospital in a timely manner to determine the cause of the disease and then proceed with treatment.
