Dog vomits undigested food

Dog vomits undigested food, which can be caused by the following reasons: indigestion, food intolerance, accidental ingestion of foreign objects, parasite infection, bacterial or viral infection, liver and kidney diseases, etc. Vomiting caused by overeating or eating too fast, which is a physiological phenomenon, is usually not too serious. After resting, the dog can basically recover. If the dog vomits due to accidental ingestion of foreign objects, X-rays are needed to confirm the location, and then surgery is required to remove the foreign objects. Finally, vomiting caused by parasite infection, bacterial or viral infection, and liver and kidney damage is pathological and usually accompanied by other symptoms. The condition is more severe and requires timely medical attention and symptomatic treatment.

Dog vomiting can be divided into physiological vomiting and pathological vomiting. If a dog vomits undigested food and then eats it again, it belongs to physiological vomiting, and owners generally do not need to worry too much. However, if pathological vomiting is caused by other reasons, owners need to pay more attention and take the dog to the vet for inspection and treatment if necessary.

  1. Indigestion

Remember that most dogs are rather greedy and can easily eat too fast or too much at once, especially large breeds.

Such a large amount of food stimulating the dog's stomach can cause indigestion and vomiting of undigested food. Owners are advised to feed dogs on a regular schedule and in small portions, and to deliberately control their eating speed. You can also use a slow feeder bowl.

  1. Inability to adapt after changing food

Dogs' stomachs are very fragile. If they suddenly switch to a new brand of dog food without advance adaptation, it can also easily cause vomiting. It is recommended to feed dogs a mixture of 25% new food and 75% old food for two days, then 50% new food and 50% old food for three days, 75% new food and 25% old food for two days, and finally switch to all new food.

  1. Accidental ingestion of foreign objects

While playing normally, dogs might accidentally swallow bones, plastic bags, foam, or other foreign objects, which can stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and cause vomiting. If the dog has just eaten, it may vomit undigested food. It is recommended to take the dog to a nearby veterinary hospital for an X-ray. If the dog has indeed swallowed a foreign object, it should be removed promptly to avoid causing an intestinal obstruction. Otherwise, it can lead to necrosis and sepsis, which could be life-threatening.

  1. Parasite infection

Improper deworming or not deworming regularly can also cause parasite infection in dogs, leading to vomiting. In severe cases, the dog might even vomit live parasites. In this case, owners can feed the dog deworming drugs containing ingredients such as abamectin, levamisole, and praziquantel. It is also important to pay attention to the dog's diet and avoid letting it drink raw water or eat raw food. Keep the living environment clean and hygienic.

  1. Bacterial or viral infection

If the dog vomits undigested food along with symptoms such as depression, high fever, lethargy, anorexia, and has not been vaccinated, it could be a gastrointestinal infection caused by contagious diseases like parvovirus or distemper. These diseases are more common in young dogs with weaker resistance and have a high mortality rate. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly for fluid therapy to avoid missing the best treatment opportunity.

  1. Liver and kidney diseases

When a dog has liver or kidney problems, it can also experience vomiting, as well as secondary dehydration, jaundice, acute anuria, hematuria, and other symptoms. This type of disease is relatively severe and can be difficult to detect in the early stages. Once symptoms appear, they are usually quite serious. Owners should immediately take the dog to a pet hospital for a blood test and biochemical examination and receive emergency treatment.
