symptoms of feline stomatitis

Symptoms of feline stomatitis:

A cat with stomatitis may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite or complete refusal to eat, increased thirst, drooling with clear saliva, oral mucosal congestion, ulcers or pus, bad breath, difficulty chewing, and pain. To improve this situation, besides professional treatment, proper breeding management should be adopted, and cats should be fed liquid or easily chewed food.

Is stomatitis contagious?

Feline stomatitis is an oral inflammation, and whether it is contagious depends on the cause of the disease. Stomatitis caused by mechanical injuries, such as bone spurs, fish bones, burns, or corrosion of chemical products, is not contagious. Stomatitis caused by nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B deficiency, is also non-contagious. Bacterial or viral infections, such as spirochetes, candidiasis, feline bronchitis virus, and calicivirus, can cause contagious stomatitis.

How to diagnose stomatitis?

Determining whether a cat has stomatitis mainly relies on visual inspection. Inflammation that extends beyond the gingiva, spreading to the periodontal mucosa and even the lip mucosa, constitutes stomatitis. More precisely, this is periodontal mucositis or anterior stomatitis. Inflammation and calcified hyperplasia in the posterior oral cavity, lateral oropharyngeal region, and palatine arch area are called caudal stomatitis. This is the clinical diagnosis basis, and if present, it indicates stomatitis. This is the most difficult to treat, easiest to recur, and most common form of stomatitis. Either of the two conditions indicates stomatitis.

Treatment of stomatitis:

The main treatment for ulcers and inflammation in the mouth is to clean the oral cavity and reduce inflammation. Vetericyn pet mouthwash can be used to clean the oral cavity, vitamin E oil can be applied to the ulcerated area to promote healing, Pfizer's Synulox pet anti-inflammatory drug can be given to alleviate inflammation, and cactus can be used to relieve inflammation and detoxify. Apply these remedies once or twice a day. Force feeding or administering via syringe may be necessary, and if the white blood cell count is low, immunoglobulins can be given. Capsule powder can be mixed with canned food if the cat refuses to eat. For cats that refuse to eat, cat milk powder can be fed.
