Feline Urological Syndrome Liquid Medication

When administering fluid therapy for feline urological syndrome, the medication should be formulated based on the test results to regulate electrolyte disorders and control inflammation. Urethral catheterization is also required, as this syndrome may cause urine to remain in the bladder and unable to be expelled. Therefore, inserting a urinary catheter to assist the cat in urination is necessary. Once the cat's indicators return to normal, surgery can be performed to remove stones from the bladder and urethra.

Causes of Urological Syndrome

There are many factors that can trigger feline urological syndrome, with feeding dry food containing excessive magnesium being the main culprit. Other factors include insufficient water intake, lack of activity, obesity, and cold climate. Additionally, bacterial infections, urethral tumors, urethral and bladder stones, urethral obstruction, trauma, and aseptic cystitis (feline interstitial cystitis) are also related to the syndrome.

Treatment of Urological Syndrome

Currently, urological syndrome is typically treated with antibiotics for 7-21 days, and 4-6 weeks are needed for complete elimination of bacteria if stones are present. It is recommended that owners bring their cats to a pet hospital for inspection promptly when symptoms such as hematuria, dribbling, difficulty urinating, or anuria are noticed. Timely urinary catheterization should be performed to evacuate crystals, stones, and clots from the bladder and urethra, followed by antibiotic therapy. If urinary tract blockages recur repeatedly, surgery may be necessary.

Prevention of Urological Diseases

To prevent feline urological diseases, first, ensure that cats have ample drinking water. Secondly, feed cats canned food and wet goods, as these products contain a high amount of water, increasing moisture intake for cats that dislike drinking water. However, long-term consumption of canned food and wet goods may lead to oral hygiene issues, so it is advised that cat owners brush their pets' teeth regularly and have their teeth cleaned by ultrasound at an animal hospital. Lastly, feed cats prescription foods and health supplements for the urinary tract, and neuter them early to reduce the likelihood of urinary tract problems during estrus.
