Golden Retriever Puppy Passing Green Watery Stool

When a golden retriever puppy passes green watery stool, it may be due to recently consuming too many foods containing green pigment, such as seaweed. Or it may be caused by certain parasite infections, which can cause green diarrhea. You can take your dog to the pet hospital for a fecal examination to observe if there are any parasites. It could also be due to a problem with the dog's gallbladder.

Green Stool with a Strong Odor and Soft Texture

This situation may indicate an intestinal infection with Giardia or Trichomonas, causing the stool to smell, turn green, and become soft. In this case, the dog's other physiological indicators or symptoms are normal, and its appetite is good. However, to confirm whether the dog is infected with these two parasites, a fecal sample must be collected for microscopic examination. The treatment for both parasites is to administer oral metronidazole solution for 3-7 days.

Green Watery Stool

Green diarrhea in dogs may be due to indigestion, which prevents bilirubin from being reduced to biliverdin in the colon. It is likely caused by colitis or parasites that prevent bilirubin reduction. It is also possible that the dog's food contains green ingredients, causing the stool to turn green. Diarrhea indicates an inflammatory bowel disease or bacterial infection. Note that it could also be a sign of parvovirus infection, so observe the stool to see if it turns dark brown or tomato-like.

What to Do if Your Dog Passes Green Stool

The green color in dog feces usually comes from two sources: food and bile. If it comes from food, simply adjusting the diet can improve the situation. If it comes from bile, it indicates excessive bile secretion, which may indicate a liver problem. Visit the hospital immediately to identify the cause and receive treatment promptly to avoid delaying the dog's treatment and potentially causing liver damage or failure.
