How long does a dog take to give birth?

Dogs usually take about 2 months to give birth. Before giving birth, dogs may show signs such as refusing to eat or drink, nesting, arching their backs, straining, frequently licking their abdomens or around their vulvas. Their temperature may also drop by about 1°C, and the lower the temperature on the day of delivery, the closer the dog is to giving birth. When the owner notices a watery discharge from the dog's vulva, or a watery discharge with bloodstains, it's time to prepare for the new arrival.

  1. A dog's pregnancy usually lasts for about 2 months, plus or minus a few days. In the first month of pregnancy, there are generally no obvious changes to the dog's body shape. About a month and a half into the pregnancy, the dog's belly will start to noticeably swell. As the due date approaches, the dog will begin to look for a warm, secluded place to give birth and may become anxious, restless, and lose its appetite.

  2. When a dog starts to strain or produce a watery discharge, it usually means the dog is about to give birth. From this point on, it usually takes about 1 hour for the dog to deliver its first puppy.

  3. If after two hours the dog has not given birth, it's time to consider the possibility of complications such as difficult labor. In this case, the owner should take the dog to the pet hospital as soon as possible for a caesarean section to avoid endangering the dog's life.
