How long does it take to treat enteric distemper in dogs?

Dogs infected with enteric distemper generally require about a month of treatment to fully recover. Distemper is the number one contagious disease in dogs. After infection, dogs mainly show symptoms such as sneezing, purulent rhinorrhea, coughing, and later in the infection, dogs may also show intermittent seizures and other neurological symptoms. The best way to prevent distemper is to regularly vaccinate dogs against infectious diseases.

What is enteric distemper

Canine distemper, commonly known as dog distemper, is a malignant infectious disease that mainly affects young dogs. Once infected, the mortality rate among young dogs can be as high as 80% to 90%. The early symptoms of dogs infected with canine distemper usually include persistent high fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, and cool secretions from the eyes and nose, accompanied by sneezing, coughing, and other respiratory symptoms. Later, there may be persistent high fever, cough, purulent rhinorrhea, purulent conjunctivitis, and intermittent seizures等 neurological symptoms. Enteric distemper refers to dogs infected with the disease who, in addition to the above respiratory symptoms, also show gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, acute gastroenteritis, and intussusception.

How to treat distemper

  1. In the early stages of canine distemper infection, high-immune serum against canine distemper and broad-spectrum antibiotics can be used for subcutaneous or intramuscular injection to control the development of the disease and secondary infections.
  2. If a dog infected with distemper has severe vomiting and diarrhea, timely fluid replacement therapy is needed to replenish the lost water and adjust the electrolyte balance.
  3. To help a dog with distemper reduce fever, combined use of antibiotics and antipyretic drugs is necessary.
  4. To protect the gastrointestinal tract of dogs with distemper, oral administration of tannic acid protein and bismuth subnitrate can be given.

How to prevent distemper

  1. Vaccination: The most effective measure to prevent canine distemper virus is vaccination. Get vaccinated annually, with three doses the first year, each dose at an interval of 21 days.
  2. Daily management: During the high-risk season of distemper, reduce the time dogs spend in public places and pay attention to the dog's personal and environmental hygiene, regularly disinfecting the home environment.
