How often to change cat litter
Cat litter usually needs to be changed every 1-2 weeks, depending on the type of litter, the number of cats, and the frequency of defecation. When changing new litter, firstly, dump all the old litter and wash the litter box and scoop clean. Secondly, thoroughly disinfect the litter box and its surrounding environment. If the litter box is not cleaned and the litter is not changed in a timely manner, it can easily lead to urinary tract infections in cats, resulting in cats urinating and defecating everywhere.
There is no fixed frequency for changing litter, and it is generally recommended that owners judge based on the following aspects.
- Type of litter
Common litters include tofu litter, crystal litter, bentonite litter, pine litter, and paper litter. Tofu litter is moderately priced, easy to form clumps, has less dust, coarser particles, and good deodorization effect. It is easier to hold dirt than other litters and can be changed every 10 days or so as long as the litter is cleaned properly. Crystal litter absorbs cat urine and does not form clumps. It needs to be completely changed whenever the cat urinates twice or three times.
- Number of cats
If you have only one cat, you can change the litter less frequently, such as once every three days or twice a week. However, if you have more than one cat, you may need to change the litter daily. Because it is unclear which cat's feces may have problems, frequent litter changes are beneficial to cat hygiene to prevent infectious diseases.
Of course, if you only have one cat, you can choose expensive scented tofu litter. This litter is safe, environmentally friendly, and can be directly flushed into the drain, making it very convenient to use.
- Frequency of defecation
We know that normal cats usually defecate 2-3 times a day, and their feces have normal shape, texture, and color. In this case, you can wait longer before changing the litter. However, if the cat has diarrhea, there will be many unclean substances in the litter that cannot be cleaned thoroughly, and you will need to change the litter more frequently.
Note: During the cat's vaccination period, when the cat moves to a new environment, or when the cat is sick, it is not recommended to change the litter. And when changing to a different brand or type of litter, you should first mix the previously used litter, which will make the cat feel more secure and avoid discomfort.
