How to Care for a Paralyzed Cat

The impact of paralysis on a cat's normal life is significant. If the paralysis is caused by temporary nerve compression, which temporarily immobilizes the cat's four limbs, normalcy can be restored after the compression is relieved. However, if the cause is a spinal or cervical nerve injury, the likelihood of spontaneous recovery is very small. Generally, treatment is required to achieve the goal of regaining health, which may involve surgical repair or electrical acupuncture stimulation.

Causes of Cat Paralysis

Causes of cat paralysis include: traumatic injuries that result in spinal or nerve problems, leading to paralysis; calcium deficiency, which can cause weakened limbs or even paralysis in extreme cases; infectious diseases or other illnesses that cause severe dehydration, acid-base imbalance, and weakened limbs. Paralysis can also result from injured motor neurons or neuritis; or posterior leg paralysis caused by cerebral thrombosis or posterior limb vascular circulation disorders.

How to Treat Paralysis

The treatment for lower body paralysis in cats depends on the specific cause of the paralysis. It may be neuritis, thoracic intervertebral disc herniation compressing the spinal cord. It could also be fractures or spinal cord nerve damage caused by traumatic injuries. Or it may be due to lack of vitamin B substances or viral infections. Further diagnosis is required at a pet hospital. Treatment may involve internal medicine, surgery, and traditional Chinese veterinary acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Cat Paralysis Care

After a cat becomes paralyzed, its mobility and feeding ability are affected to varying degrees. Cat owners should constantly observe the cat's excretion and defecation situation and clean up promptly to avoid contamination. Pet diapers can be used. Additionally, owners should always monitor the cat's eating habits. When the cat has difficulty eating, assisted feeding is necessary. Moreover, attention should be paid to the cat's mental health to avoid psychological stress and depression caused by physical defects.
