How to Diagnose Ascites in Cats and Dogs

Cats and dogs can determine the presence of ascites through palpation, examining whether the abdominal circumference has increased and whether there is a clear sense of abdominal fluctuation. Then, assisted by ultrasound and X-rays, the amount and proportion of fluid can be estimated. Once ascites is confirmed, partial fluid can be aspirated to preliminarily determine the color, texture, and smell of the fluid, which can help diagnose whether it is caused by hydrops, hemorrhage, or abscess. Ascites is a symptom, and further diagnosis and treatment are needed to determine the specific cause.

Can ascites be transmitted?

Ascites is a symptom and depends on the cause. If ascites is caused by infectious peritonitis, it can be transmitted to other cats; however, ascites caused by liver disease is generally not contagious. When cats and dogs show signs of ascites, owners should promptly take them to the vet for a diagnosis and timely treatment. Regardless of whether it is caused by infectious peritonitis, owners should disinfect the areas where cats and dogs reside.

Ascites incubation period

There is usually no distinct incubation period for ascites in cats and dogs. The appearance of ascites is mainly caused by the exacerbation of diseases, and the main causes that can lead to ascites include: ascites caused by circulatory disorders due to heart disease; ascites caused by changes in blood colloid osmotic pressure due to kidney and liver disease; and ascites caused by infectious peritonitis.

Ascites treatment methods

It is recommended to consult a doctor, and the main treatment consideration is causal treatment. Actively treat the primary disease, such as liver ascites, by actively treating liver disease and reducing the stimulation of the underlying disease. Symptomatic treatment is also necessary, actively controlling clinical symptoms and complications, stopping exudation, and performing abdominal puncture drainage when necessary. It is advised to strictly follow the doctor's advice and not self-medicate to avoid delay in seeking proper treatment.
