How to handle a cat that refuses to have its nails trimmed

When a cat refuses to let its nails be trimmed and becomes aggressive, owners can try the following methods:

  1. Distract the cat with toys or treats. Before trimming the cat's nails, offer it a small cat treat or catnip toy to calm its mood. This will make the cat more willing to cooperate when trying to trim its nails again. If the cat continues to resist, owners can gently scold it to help it gradually get used to nail trimming.

  2. Trim the cat's nails when it's sleeping or relaxed. Owners can try trimming the cat's nails when it's asleep or in a relaxed state. Be gentle and quiet during the process to avoid waking the cat up. Wear gloves to protect yourself from being scratched, as cats can react instinctively by scratching when they wake up.

  3. Use a cat bag or an Elizabethan collar for assistance. Owners can also use a cat bag to assist with trimming, or they can put an Elizabethan collar on the cat to cover its head. Once the cat is secured and unable to move, trim its nails one at a time. Note that cats usually have five nails on their front paws, and care should be taken not to miss any. Watch the bloodline when trimming the nails, and if it's accidentally cut, use a pet-specific styptic powder to stop the bleeding.

  4. Regularly touch the cat's limbs during daily interactions. This will help the cat get used to the sensation of having its nails trimmed. If the cat still resists nail trimming, consider taking it to a veterinarian, where a professional can safely restrain and trim the cat's nails.
