How to judge if a dog is okay after accidentally swallowing a Chinese date pit
Usually, we cannot judge whether a dog is okay after accidentally swallowing a Chinese date pit by time. If the dog really is okay, it can be judged after the date pit is expelled from the anus. If the dog can expel the date pit within two to three days and there are no other abnormal symptoms, it means the dog is fine. However, if the date pit cannot be expelled and the dog shows symptoms such as decreased appetite and vomiting, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.
First of all, the main component of the date pit swallowed by the dog is wood fiber, which cannot be absorbed and digested by the dog's digestive tract. After accidental ingestion, it may cause damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa. If the date pit is large and has a sharp edge, it can easily scratch the digestive tract or cause a perforation. During this process, some clinical symptoms may occur, such as abdominal pain, bloating, and bloody stools. If the date pit is in the stomach, the dog may also show decreased appetite or vomiting. In this case, it is recommended for the pet owner to withhold food and water from the dog.
When the dog successfully expels the date pit, it is recommended for the pet owner to feed the dog probiotics to regulate the intestines for 1 to 2 weeks. During the repair of the gastrointestinal tract, attention should also be paid to diet, and the dog should be fed small amounts of easily digestible food until the dog is asymptomatic.
There is a certain risk if the dog does not expel the date pit within 1 to 2 days, as the date pit can scratch the upper digestive tract, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine as it passes through. Therefore, there is a certain risk before the date pit is expelled, and it may even cause digestive tract obstruction. If the dog does not expel the date pit 3 days after accidental ingestion, and shows symptoms such as decreased appetite and vomiting, it is likely that the date pit has caused digestive tract obstruction in the intestines. In this case, the dog cannot expel the date pit spontaneously, and it is recommended for the pet owner to take the dog to the pet hospital for an X-ray examination to determine the location of the pit obstruction. If necessary, surgery may be required to remove the foreign object.
