How to recognize when a dog needs deworming
There are several ways to determine if a dog needs deworming:
Observe the dog's skin: Check if there are any redness, bumps, or other symptoms on the dog's skin.
Examine the dog's feces or vomit: Look for visible parasites or eggs.
Observe the dog's body shape: Note any significant weight loss.
Part the dog's fur: Check for attached adult parasites or eggs.
Watch the dog's behavior: Look for constant scratching or rubbing its butt on the ground.
Recognize by observing the dog's skin
If your dog has been constantly scratching its skin recently, pay attention to whether there are any redness, bumps, or other symptoms. If so, it's likely caused by parasites and requires immediate deworming.
- Recognize by observing the dog's feces or vomit
If there are many parasites in the dog's body, they may cause vomiting or diarrhea with worms. So, carefully examine the dog's excrement. If there are visible parasites or eggs in the dog's feces or vomit, deworming is necessary.
- Recognize by observing the dog's body shape
If the dog eats a lot but suddenly becomes thin, it may indicate internal parasites such as roundworms or tapeworms, which are constantly absorbing the dog's nutrients. This is one of the typical symptoms of a dog infected with internal parasites and requires timely deworming.
- Recognize by parting the dog's fur
Some dogs with long hair are more likely to hide parasites in their fur. Therefore, owners can gently part the dog's fur to check for adult parasites or eggs attached to the dog's hair. If so, deworm the dog immediately to prevent transmission to humans.
- Recognize by observing the dog's behavior
Some typical behaviors of dogs, such as itching, biting their fur, black spots between fur (flea feces), and rubbing their buttocks on the ground, indicate possible parasites and require immediate deworming.
Note: To prevent dogs from contracting parasites, owners should regularly deworm their dogs, usually once every three months for internal deworming and once a month for external deworming.
