How to Treat Ringworm in Cats

The treatment of ringworm in cats first requires preventing them from scratching and biting. A recommended method is to fit them with an Elizabethan collar. Secondly, isolation is crucial. Ringworm is contagious not only to other cats but also to humans, so owners need to take precautions to protect themselves. Finally, the affected area should have its hair pushed aside to expose the lesion. Topical medications containing ketoconazole can then be applied.

Why Do Cats Get Ringworm?

Ringworm is caused by a fungus, mainly Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and is simply a colloquial term for this type of skin disease. Fungi are ubiquitous, mainly residing in dust and soil. Due to varying skin resistance among individuals, some cats can contract ringworm while others cannot. Cats who frequently crawl into corners or live in households with plants are more susceptible to infection.

Symptoms of Ringworm

  1. The main symptom of ringworm is circular patches of hair loss with crusting. When the affected area is illuminated by a Wood's lamp, a distinct fluorescent apple green color can be seen.
  2. Ringworm is caused by a fungal infection, which requires a long course of treatment. Oral medication and baths are usually combined for rapid results. It is best not to use spray medications long-term on the affected area as it can cause hair follicle damage, ultimately leading to hair loss.

How to Treat Ringworm

Firstly, after confirming that a cat is infected with ringworm, the affected cat should be isolated and the household environment thoroughly disinfected, including objects the cat has come into contact with. It is also essential to disinfect hands after touching the infected cat to prevent human and animal infection. If the cat has a small area of ringworm infection, directly apply a topical antifungal ointment to the affected area three times a day and fit the cat with an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking. If the infected area is larger, shave the hair off the affected area, apply the antifungal ointment, and combine it with fungal baths for treatment. During the treatment, feed the cat supplements such as lecithin and fish oil to help its hair grow back faster and recover better.
