Kitten Snoring While Sleeping

Kitten snoring may be caused by feelings of comfort and relaxation, or it could be due to the breed, such as with Garfield and Persian cats, who have short noses and naturally emit snoring sounds while sleeping. On the other hand, if a kitten suddenly starts snoring when it didn't before, it could be due to a respiratory infection. For example, when the respiratory tract is obstructed or becomes narrower, snoring can occur. It is recommended to observe the kitten for other abnormal symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, mouth breathing, or difficulty breathing, and consult a veterinarian promptly for a screening of respiratory diseases.

  1. Feeling Comfortable and Relaxed

Kitten snoring is a unique physiological phenomenon in cats, and most cats exhibit this behavior when they are extremely comfortable and relaxed, which is not under their voluntary control. This is especially true for young kittens, who will frequently snore due to their smaller size. Snoring can also be a way for young kittens to communicate with their mothers. Some kittens will even purr while nursing.

  1. Breed-Related Reasons

Cats with short noses, such as Garfield and Persian cats, are prone to snoring due to the inherent narrow nasal cavity and shorter nasal passages. This makes it more difficult to breathe smoothly during sleep, leading to snoring. This is a normal occurrence and there is no need for excessive worry.

  1. Disease-Related Reasons

If a cat that never snored before suddenly begins to snore, it could be due to a respiratory infection. Diseases such as herpesvirus, calicivirus, and mycoplasma or chlamydia infections can easily cause upper respiratory symptoms, including typical snoring during sleep. If any abnormalities are detected, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
