Red eyes in dogs: Causes and Treatments

Red eyes in dogs may be caused by intense exercise, trauma, conjunctivitis, corneal inflammation, or other factors. First, if the red eyes are caused by intense exercise, it is a normal physiological phenomenon and dog owners generally do not need to worry too much. If the red eyes are unusual and accompanied by other symptoms, such as eye pain, swelling, etc., it is recommended that dog owners take their dogs to a regular hospital for an eye examination to identify the cause and further treat the condition.

  1. Intense Exercise

If a dog often engages in intense exercise, it may increase the speed of blood circulation, causing congestion in the eye area, and leading to red eyes. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. As the speed of blood circulation returns to normal, the symptoms of red eyes will gradually disappear, and medication is usually not needed for treatment.

  1. Trauma

If the eye area is injured, it can cause damage to the local skin and soft tissues, leading to redness, swelling, and heat pain. First, apply an ice bag to the affected area. After 48 hours, use a hot towel for warmth, which can promote blood circulation and relieve local redness and swelling. At the same time, follow the doctor's advice and take medications for promoting blood circulation and relieving pain.

  1. Conjunctivitis

Usually caused by bacteria or allergic reactions, it can lead to conjunctival damage, resulting in red eyes, itching, and other symptoms. If not treated in time, it can cause further damage to the conjunctiva and lead to decreased vision. Treatment usually involves taking antibiotics and anti-histamine medications under a doctor's guidance.

  1. Keratitis

Mainly caused by external or internal pathogenic factors, it presents with symptoms such as eye pain, photophobia, watery eyes, and excessive eyelid spasms. In severe cases, it can cause corneal damage and red eyes. Treatment usually involves using antibiotic eye drops according to the doctor's instructions, which can help control the condition.
