Symptoms of Canine Diabetes

The classic symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, increased urination, cataracts, and weight loss. Clinical examinations reveal a significant increase in blood sugar levels, which are caused by persistent hyperglycemia in dogs. If not treated promptly, the condition will gradually worsen, leading to severe vomiting and diarrhea, and eventually causing ketoacidosis, which is life-threatening. Late-stage diabetes in dogs can also lead to many complications, such as kidney disease, myocardial infarction, and cerebral infarction. Therefore, it is recommended that owners bring their dogs to the hospital for urine sugar testing as soon as they notice increased drinking and urination, and start treatment promptly after diagnosis.

  1. Diabetes is a common chronic disease mainly caused by the destruction of cells in dogs' bodies responsible for regulating blood sugar, leading to imbalance and ultimately causing diabetes.

  2. The main symptoms of canine diabetes are increased thirst, increased urination, cataracts, and weight loss. In laboratory tests, the most obvious indicator is a significant rise in blood sugar levels, all caused by persistent hyperglycemia in dogs.

As the condition worsens, the dog's exhaled breath will have a ketone smell. Further development can lead to persistent vomiting and bloody diarrhea, eventually causing ketoacidosis and diabetic coma.

  1. Late-stage diabetes in dogs can also result in many complications, such as kidney disease, heart failure, and cerebral infarction. The symptoms of different complications vary, but usually include incontinence, seizures, foamy mouth, difficulty breathing, and rapid heartbeat. In the final stage, respiration stops, and the dog dies.
