Toxic substances to cats

There are many toxic substances to cats, including some chemicals used in households to kill insects and rodents, such as organophosphates, organofluorides, and coumarins. Most of these cause symptoms such as excitement, severe vomiting and diarrhea, respiratory depression, seizures, and more. Additionally, common household items such as coffee, chocolate, and onions can also cause cat poisoning, so attention must be paid.

Symptoms of cat poisoning

Cat poisoning includes various types, such as salt poisoning, drug poisoning, and food poisoning. The early symptoms of cat poisoning include restlessness, aimless wandering, screaming, stumbling, muscle tremors, seizures, drooling, rhinorrhea, foaming at the mouth, cyanosis of the mucous membranes, extreme thirst, normal or low body temperature. Middle and late symptoms include difficulty breathing, diarrhea, urinary incontinence, rapid and weak pulse, limb paralysis, general fatigue, and eventually coma and death.

First aid for cat poisoning

To prevent further absorption of the toxin, emergency measures such as emesis, gastric lavage, purgation, diuresis, enema, toxin adsorption, protection of gastric mucosa, precipitation, bloodletting, and cleaning can be adopted. Paracentesis can be used to destroy the toxins that have entered the gastrointestinal tract. Herbal remedies such as honeysuckle, mung beans, licorice, and talcum powder can also be used for detoxification. At the same time, it is necessary to maintain normal respiratory function, cardiovascular function, body temperature, and central nervous system function. Specific antidotes can be used to alleviate the pain of the affected animal.

What to feed cats after poisoning

If your cat eats toxic substances such as toilet cleaner, shampoo, pesticides, etc., it is recommended to induce vomiting or feed high-protein foods such as goat's milk or soy milk to alleviate the cat's stomach absorption of toxic substances. Then take the cat to the pet hospital for symptomatic treatment. If the cat has been poisoned by eating rotten food for a long time, it is recommended to send the cat to the hospital for examination and treatment, and to give symptomatic fluid replacement and detoxification therapy.
