What are the black spots on my dog's belly?

Black spots on a dog's belly may be caused by various factors such as melanin deposits, bacterial or fungal skin infections, parasite infections, long-term lack of bathing, and genetic inheritance. If your dog has no other abnormal symptoms, it is likely due to melanin deposits, long-term lack of bathing, or black spots present at birth, in which case there is no need to worry too much. However, if accompanied by symptoms such as dandruff, hair loss, and fungal patches, it may be caused by bacterial, fungal, or parasitic skin infections, and it is recommended to consult a veterinarian for medication treatment immediately.

  1. Melanin deposits

As dogs age, melanin deposition becomes severe, resulting in black spots on the belly, also known as "age spots". Owners do not need to be overly concerned, as this is a normal phenomenon.

  1. Bacterial and fungal skin infections

If a dog contracts fungal or bacterial skin infections, it may form black spots on the skin, usually accompanied by symptoms such as dandruff, hair loss, fungal patches, and pus. It is recommended to take the dog to a pet hospital for a full skin examination and testing to identify the actual cause before starting targeted treatment.

  1. Parasite infections

If a dog has not undergone external parasite prevention for a long time, it may develop black spots caused by parasite feces, such as fleas. To check if the black spots are caused by parasites, gently rub the spots with a wet tissue to see if there is blood. If so, it is necessary to give the dog external parasite prevention as soon as possible.

  1. Long-term lack of bathing and cleaning

Dogs like to lie down with their bellies facing down. When their bellies come into contact with dirty things, they may not be cleaned promptly, allowing black dirt to adhere to the skin. Gently rubbing the spots with a wet tissue can help determine if they are caused by dirt. If they can be removed, it is likely due to dirt and the dog should be given a bath to cleanse the spot.

  1. Genetic inheritance

Some dogs are born with black spots on their skin, such as Dalmatians. If there are no obvious abnormalities, there is no need for excessive concern.
