What are the causes of a cat's hoarse voice?
A hoarse voice in cats is a relatively common phenomenon. Besides the continuous crying of cats, some diseases can also cause this phenomenon. It is best to use medication and treatment based on the causes of the cat's hoarse voice to achieve significant therapeutic effects.
Causes of a Cat's Hoarse Voice
There may be several reasons for a cat's hoarse voice and teary eyes. One possible cause is that the cat has eaten something foreign and injured its throat, resulting in a hoarse voice and pain. Another possible cause is that the cat has eaten a spicy or irritating food or drug, which has stimulated the throat and caused a hoarse voice. This may also be due to a cold or tracheobronchitis.
Additionally, a hoarse voice can be caused by over-exertion of the voice, such as excessive meowing, which dries out the throat. In this case, increasing the cat's water intake can help alleviate the symptom.
What to Give a Cat with a Hoarse Voice
If the cat's hoarse voice is caused by viruses such as cupidovirus, herpesvirus, or chlamydia, treatment recommendations include using antibiotics to control secondary infections. The preferred type of antibiotic is β-lactam antibiotics. Additionally, inhibiting virus replication with interferon and increasing immunity with oral administration of Astragalus polysaccharide and immunoglobulins are recommended. If the hoarse voice is caused by vomiting and stomach acid stimulation of the throat, anti-vomiting drugs should be used to control the vomiting symptoms.
What to Do if a Cat Has a Hoarse Voice
If a cat has a hoarse voice due to a cold and fever, it is best to take the cat to the hospital as soon as possible to prevent the condition from worsening and triggering more severe respiratory diseases. At home, increase the cat's water intake, increase the humidity in the environment, and consider taking the cat to the pet hospital for nebulizer treatment to relieve symptoms. Monitor the cat's temperature regularly and keep its diet simple and light.
If the cat is in heat, it may continue to meow even with a hoarse voice. In this case, it is recommended that the cat bebred or undergo a sterilization surgery to alleviate its suffering.
