What are the symptoms of a cat having a fever?
It is not easy to detect the symptoms of a cat having a fever. When the cat has a mild fever, the main symptoms include a slight decrease in appetite and depression. When the fever is high, the cat will mainly show symptoms such as sleepiness, loss of appetite, and reluctance to walk. There are many causes of fever, such as infection, but in most cases, it is difficult to find a specific pathogen, and symptomatic treatment should be adopted.
The symptoms of a cat's fever are related to the temperature of the fever. If it is only a mild fever, the cat may only show symptoms such as a slight decrease in appetite and depression. If it is a high fever, the cat will exhibit symptoms such as sleepiness, loss of appetite, and reluctance to walk. Additionally, when touching the cat's exposed skin while it has a fever, you can clearly feel the increased temperature. The main causes of fever in cats are considered to be infectious factors, including bacterial and viral infections. Bacterial infections are more common, such as acute respiratory infections or acute gastrointestinal infections. In this case, the first step is to timely address the fever, such as taking oral fever-reducing medication or giving subcutaneous injections of fever-reducing drugs. Then, based on the specific situation, follow-up treatment such as active anti-infective therapy should be administered. In most cases, the causes of fever in cats are diverse, and symptomatic treatment is the main approach. If a cat has repeated bouts of fever, it is recommended to undergo further examination promptly, as diseases such as feline infectious peritonitis can also cause fever in cats, and the incidence of these diseases is relatively high.
A cat's normal body temperature is 37.8-39.2°C. You can measure the cat's temperature at home using an electronic thermometer by placing it under the cat's armpit. Alternatively, you can use an ear thermometer to measure the temperature in the cat's ear canal. If you find the temperature to be too high, it is advisable to bring the cat to a pet hospital for treatment.
