What to do if your cat has diarrhea and dehydration

*Cat diarrhea and dehydration require timely fluid replacement. You can take your cat to the pet hospital for intravenous treatment. On the other hand, you need to temporarily stop feeding your cat. You can give it a small amount of cool boiled water and add a small amount of glucose to help the cat replenish energy. You can also replenish water through oral electrolyte solution. When your cat has diarrhea, you need to find the cause in a timely manner and treat it accordingly to avoid blindly using drugs that may exacerbate your cat's condition.

Firstly, diarrhea and dehydration in cats may be caused by viral diseases such as feline distemper. Unvaccinated cats are more susceptible to feline distemper because they lack the antibodies to resist the virus. Cats with the disease will show signs of lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting of yellow-green liquid, and diarrhea. Timely treatment measures should be taken after diagnosis, and fasting and water deprivation are necessary when vomiting and diarrhea are severe. Cat diarrhea and dehydration can be effectively treated with intravenous therapy to prevent dehydration.

Secondly, pancreatitis in cats may be the cause, usually due to long-term feeding of high-fat or oily foods, pancreatic duct obstruction or infection. Cats with pancreatitis will show symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased blood sugar, and some cats will assume a praying position. The treatment principles for feline pancreatitis include inhibiting pancreatic secretion and supplementing electrolyte solutions. In terms of diet, low-fat and easily digestible food should be fed to the cat.

Lastly, gastrointestinal diseases may cause diarrhea and dehydration in cats, such as acute enteritis. Typically, cats with acute enteritis will show symptoms of digestive disorders, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever. This is mainly caused by poor breeding, colds, etc., such as cats eating spoiled food or unclean water. When a cat has acute enteritis, it is necessary to stop feeding immediately, and give the dehydrated cat intravenous treatment. Always pay attention to the cat's diet hygiene.
