What to do if your dog is constantly itchy

First of all, determine the cause of the itch. Clinically, there are several common causes of itching: skin diseases, skin allergies, and parasitic diseases. Treatment should be tailored to the specific cause. If it is a skin disease or parasitic disease, symptoms such as local hair loss, crusting, and pus may occur. It is recommended to visit the hospital in time for treatment. If it is skin allergies, applying a dexamethasone ointment can help alleviate the itch by avoiding allergens.

Causes of constant itching in dogs

There are many reasons why a dog's body itches, with common causes including not bathing for a long time, external parasite infections, and skin diseases. Among them, external parasite infections are mainly fleas. When there are many fleas, you can clearly see many black and brown dots on the dog's hair.

Dog parasite symptoms

Dog parasites can be divided into internal and external parasites. Internal parasites include roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and blood parasites, which mainly manifest as gastrointestinal symptoms and malnutrition. However, blood parasites can cause high fever, jaundice, and hemolysis. Common external parasites include fleas, lice, and ticks, which can cause malnutrition, itching, and even transmit other diseases. Therefore, preventive parasite control should be done on time, rather than waiting for parasites to appear before conducting treatment.

What to do if your dog has parasites

The main parasites on dogs' bodies include fleas, lice, ticks, Demodex mites, and Sarcoptes mites.

  1. Fleas, ticks, and lice can be treated with external parasite control drugs, either sprayed or dropped. Avoid bathing for one week, and if there are still parasites after one week, consider using the medication again. Of course, if there are many fleas, you can also choose oral medications that work quickly.
  2. For Demodex and Sarcoptes mites, injectable parasite control drugs or oral parasite control medications are needed, along with baths using parasite-control shampoos.
