What's going on when a small dog has bloody diarrhea?
There are many causes of bloody diarrhea in small dogs, such as hemorrhagic enteritis, parasite infections, infectious enteritis, and intestinal injuries caused by foreign objects. Due to the long-term bleeding, it can easily lead to secondary ion disorders, dehydration, and hemorrhagic shock. It is recommended to bring the dog to a pet hospital for further inspection and treatment as soon as possible to avoid delaying the best treatment time.
First of all, consider hemorrhagic enteritis, which is characterized by diarrhea. When the symptoms worsen, intestinal bleeding may occur. The intestine is mainly divided into the small intestine and the large intestine, with the small intestine located at the front of the large intestine. When the small intestine bleeds, the feces is usually black green or tar-like, and although you can't see bright red blood, a distinct bloody smell can be detected. When the large intestine bleeds, you can usually find blood threads or clots on the surface of the stool. If the bleeding continues to increase, it can lead to more severe symptoms such as bloody diarrhea.
Secondly, consider parasite infections, mainly贾第鞭毛虫和球虫. Among them, the clinical symptoms of Giardia infection are gray feces, accompanied by blood or mucus. Cryptosporidium infection usually causes diarrhea and the end of the stool is stained with blood.
Infectious enteritis is mainly caused by canine coronavirus and canine parvovirus infections. The latter is extremely harmful to dogs. If not treated promptly and effectively after infection, the dog usually dies within 3-5 days. The characteristic symptoms of canine parvovirus infection are dark brown or tomato sauce-like bloody stools, accompanied by a foul smell.
Finally, intestinal injuries caused by foreign objects refer to dogs accidentally eating sharp metal or bones. These foreign objects may scratch the intestinal mucosa when passing through the intestine, causing bloody diarrhea, and even directly puncture the intestine, leading to serious symptoms such as intestinal perforation.
