What to do when your cat suddenly starts defecating and urinating outside the litter box

Cat suddenly defecating and urinating outside the litter box might be due to reasons such as dirty litter box, heat, urinary system diseases, etc. First of all, if the owner does not clean the litter box in time, the cat will refuse to go in and excrete. Secondly, when a cat is in heat, it will also attract male cats by defecating and urinating randomly. Lastly, if the cat has urinary system diseases, it will be unable to control its bowel and bladder movements, such as urinary tract infections, urinary stones, etc. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.

  1. Dirty litter box

Cats are very clean animals. If the owner does not clean the litter box in time, when the litter box is too dirty or has a bad smell, the cat will be unwilling to use it for defecation and urination. Therefore, the owner must regularly clean the litter box, usually suggesting cleaning twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. If the owner is busy due to work, cleaning once a day is also acceptable.

  1. Heat

If the cat has not been spayed or neutered, when it is in heat, it may attract male cats by randomly defecating, screaming, and sticking its butt in the air. This behavior will disappear after the cat is no longer in heat, so owners don't need to worry too much. Of course, if there is no breeding demand for the cat, it is also possible to bring the cat to the pet hospital for sterilization surgery before or during the non-breeding season.

  1. Urinary system diseases

If the cat has a urinary system disease, it will be unable to control its body and will defecate and urinate anywhere, such as urinary tract infections, urinary stones, cystitis, bladder stones, etc. At this time, the owner should pay attention to observe. If the cat shows symptoms such as frequent urination, urgency, blood in the urine, and pain during urination, it is necessary to go to the pet hospital for examination and treatment promptly to avoid delay in the disease.
