What to do when your dog leaks urine due to excitement
When a dog leaks urine due to excitement, owners should pay attention to controlling their emotions and not let them get too excited. However, some small breeds of dogs, such as Chihuahuas and Maltese, may leak urine due to their small size and inadequate urethral length, especially in females after giving birth. This cannot be cured completely, and owners should try to spend more time with them.
Causes of leakage in young dogs
The bodies of young dogs are not fully developed, and the vagus nerve can confuse various signals. The muscular wall of the urethra is also developing, so leakage during excitement is common. This usually improves as the dog grows older. Leakage in young dogs may be caused by inability to control urination, fright, bladder damage, or urinary system diseases.
When can a dog hold its urine?
Around 5-6 months after birth, when a dog's organs have basically developed, it can hold and urinate normally. This mainly depends on the dog's development and the owner's daily education methods. If a dog constantly leaks urine and soils itself, it may be a habit problem or overfeeding. However, if the dog hasn't been properly trained to urinate in a designated area, it may also experience difficulty holding its urine. In some cases, urinary tract problems can also cause similar symptoms in young dogs.
Treatment for urinary incontinence in dogs
The first step in treating urinary incontinence in dogs is to determine the cause. If the incontinence is caused by trauma, surgical repair can be performed. If the wound heals well after surgery, the dog can return to normal urination. If the incontinence is caused by nerve damage, medications to repair nerves can be attempted. If these are ineffective, the dog may need to wear diapers.
