What to feed cats to relieve constipation
To relieve constipation in cats, you can feed them some liquid foods, such as rice soup. Soak the cat food before feeding it to soften it. Encourage your cat to drink more water, and if they don't like water, you can add some honey to make it more appealing. Sweet foods are less likely to be rejected by cats. Honey water can also help with constipation. Reduce the frequency of canned food and opt for high-fiber foods instead. You can even make your own cat food, keeping it light and avoiding excessive seasoning. If your cat enjoys fruits and vegetables, feed them more of these.
Causes of Constipation
Cats experience constipation when they are fed a long-term diet of dry food and limited fluid intake. Eating excessive amounts of bone meal and calcium phosphate causes the intestines to form gray paste blocks, or insufficient intake of stimulating foods. Diseases that cause painful bowel movements, such as foreign objects in the rectum; and mechanical obstructive diseases like prostatic hyperplasia can lead to constipation in cats.
Massage Therapy for Constipation
Cat owners can gently rub their cat's abdomen in a clockwise direction. However, massage alone may not be effective for severe constipation. In mild cases, try feeding the cat适量的蜂蜜水 and massaging their abdomen. For severe constipation, owners may need to use laxatives or enemas to help the cat defecate.
Prevention of Constipation
Always ensure a balanced diet, allowing cats to bask in sunlight, exercise regularly, and eat natural foods. Increase the amount of roughage in their diet to promote intestinal movement. If constipation is suspected, reduce the amount of meat, especially animal organs, and keep your cat from eating random objects outside to prevent indigestion.
