Why can't dogs eat chicken bones?
Dogs cannot eat chicken bones mainly because they are very hard and the broken ends are sharp. Moreover, dogs cannot digest them well, so after eating chicken bones, they are prone to scratching their gastrointestinal tract or causing gastrointestinal obstructions. Therefore, to avoid the above situations, it is generally recommended that owners do not feed chicken bones to dogs. If a dog accidentally eats a chicken bone and experiences bloody diarrhea, it is necessary to take it to a pet hospital for treatment.
- Scratching the gastrointestinal tract
Due to the sharpness of the chicken bones themselves, if a dog eats too fast, it can easily scratch its gastrointestinal tract, causing severe digestive tract bleeding. The dog may show symptoms of bloody stools, vomiting blood, etc. Therefore, it is recommended that before feeding a dog with chicken, the owner should remove the chicken bones. If the owner wants to feed the dog bones, they can choose larger bones such as pig bones, cow bones, and sheep bones, which can not only prevent the dog from getting stuck but also serve as a teeth grinding tool.
- Gastrointestinal obstruction
Dogs do not chew their food but swallow it directly, so eating chicken bones can easily cause gastrointestinal obstruction. This can lead to severe vomiting, drooling, and frequent scratching of the throat area, and may even cause esophageal perforation. If a dog shows the above symptoms after eating a chicken bone, it is recommended to take it to a pet hospital as soon as possible for an X-ray examination to determine the location of the bone, and then choose conservative treatment or even surgical intervention.
