Why do cats keep making purring sounds?
Purring sounds from cats may be caused by factors such as stress, fear, seeking attention, obesity, pharyngitis, rhinitis, and tracheitis. First, if the only symptom is purring and there are no other abnormal physical reactions, it is a normal phenomenon and there is no need for excessive worry. If symptoms such as nasal congestion, coughing, and sore throat occur during purring, it is recommended to take the cat to a regular hospital for treatment.
- Stress and fear
If cats are unfamiliar with their surroundings, they may feel tense and scared, expressing this through purring and growling sounds. It is advised to comfort the cat's emotions. The purring will gradually subside once the cat's mood returns to normal.
- Seeking attention
If cats are bored and lack companionship and toys, they may produce purring sounds to indicate they want their owners to play with them. The adverse reactions will gradually disappear once the cat is feeling happy.
- Obesity
If a cat is overweight, it may lead to obstructed airflow during breathing, causing snoring. It is necessary to adjust the cat's diet, avoiding excessive intake, otherwise, it may lead to continuous weight gain and affect normal breathing.
- Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa and lymph tissues. After the disease occurs, symptoms such as dry throat, foreign body sensation in the throat, and difficulty swallowing may occur. If not treated in time, it may lead to thick secretions in the throat, affecting normal breathing and causing snoring. Antibiotic medication should be taken under a doctor's guidance.
- Rhinitis
Rhinitis mainly occurs in the nasal mucosa and submucosal tissues. Typical symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing. If the nasal congestion is severe, it may affect breathing, causing snoring during sleep. Treatment should be sought by using corticosteroid nasal sprays as prescribed by a doctor.
- Tracheitis
If a cat has tracheitis, it will exhibit symptoms such as coughing and expectoration. When exposed to dust or smoke, it may affect the speed of breathing, causing snoring. Antibiotic and expectorant medication should be taken as advised by a doctor.
